About us

The Journey

HungaroFest was first organised in 1995 at the Hungarian Community Centre in Wantirna as a 3-day festival and it has successfully continued since then. The purpose of the festival is to reach out to the wider Melbourne community and invite them to experience the richness of the Hungarian culture.

The success of this festival has grown year on year, this is evidenced by the attendances of visitors that have surpassed 3000 people of all ages and cultures across the 3 days.

The HungaroFest moto is ‘See it, Hear it, Taste it and LOVE it!’ This moto encompasses the rich Hungarian Culture that is to be seen, heard, tasted and Loved.

HungaroFest delights attendees with various exhibitions, performing artists and tasty cuisines over the 3 days. There is also the ‘Dance House’/ ‘Táncház’ program.

Exhibitions include local Hungarian artists’ works along with displays of Hungarian porcelain, handcrafts, costumes and embroideries.

Performing artists entertainment program include of both local and overseas musicians and folk dancers. They will entertain with modern, classical and Hungarian folk music. which is a prominent part of the entertainment program from the various ethnic Hungarian regions.

Folk dancing is an integral component of the festival, the popular ‘Dance House’/ ‘Táncház’ program, is a "casual" Hungarian folk dance program where attendees have the opportunity to part take in folk dancing which is taught to both novices and experienced dancers, by local and overseas performers.

Tasting Hungarian cuisine is rich, full flavoured and varied. Visitors have had the opportunity to enjoy authentic dishes like goulash/gulyás, chicken paprika/csirke paprikás and stuffed cabbage rolls/töltött káposzta along with a wonderful selection of cakes, such as the famous Dobos torta.

Along with the cuisine there is the Hungarian beverages that are national staples. Hungarian wines from some of the most famous regions such as Tokaj once noted as the “king of wines and a wine for kings” by a royal. Also uniquely Hungarian fruit brandies and Unicum largely savoured as an aperitif. Then of course there is the Hungarian beers which like every nation holds dear in terms of their favourite.

Our goal has been and continues to be to bring people together from all different parts of our community that we live in allowing to people to see, hear, taste and Love the components of Hungarofest.

Hungarians like all other nationalities, have contributed to the rich fabric of society that we enjoy today in Melbourne. Hungarofest ensures we contribute to this on an ongoing basis.

HungaroFest is an event that has been staffed by community volunteers committing their precious time, effort and skills for the reward of seeing patrons indulge and enjoy the little things us Australian Hungarians were brought up with and continue to love.
